"I wanted a better pint. So I made it myself."

After years of buying a pint a night from my local bodega in New York City, I was left increasingly unsatisfied. Pints had shrunk, the ice cream was no longer natural, and flavors were not exciting anymore.

So I took matters into my own hands. In the summer of 2009, I bought a small home ice cream machine, got in touch with local farms, and started crafting my "dream 'screams" - ice cream flavors that I had only dreamed about. Like any good secret, word got out. Stories about my craft were published, a waitlist sprang up, and I quickly realized I wasn’t the only one who wanted a better pint.

MilkMade officially launched a few months later, in December of 2009, pioneering the New York food movement, defining the craft ice cream market, and building the first model for food subscription services. Along with my fellow Milkmaids, I slowly grew the Membership, expanding our ice cream delivery to neighborhood by neighborhood in New York City and Brooklyn, and now serving thousands of Members across the northeast.

The MilkMade Mission

 

Our mission at MilkMade is to deliver exceptional ice cream experiences through responsible methods of sourcing, production, and distribution. Plainly put, we like to keep it real and do it right.

We were pioneers of the craft ice cream movement, churning out pints for our Members starting in 2009. Back then, we set forth The MilkMade Manifesto to guide responsible business decisions and define the pillars of what constitutes "craft." We continue to strive for excellence in each category.

MilkMade started out of a desire for a better pint, and it is our mission to craft not only a better pint, but the best pint. Every MilkMade pint must be perfect - in flavor, taste, mouth-feel, density, and composition. Members often email, text, or tweet us with, "this is the best thing I’ve ever tasted," or "WOW" upon first taste. That's the best.

Ingredients

Every ingredient that goes into our pints must pass our Responsible Sourcing checklist ensuring that it is locally and responsibly produced. Dairy and eggs are beyond-organic. Produce is from local, sustainable farms (or an overseas cooperative). Mix-ins are hand-crafted by local food artisans whose story becomes a part of our story. To date, we've teamed up with 100+ local producers from our community. In addition, we do not use any stabilizers or gums in our 'scream.

Flavors often fall into a monthly theme, are always accompanied by a creative story, and highlight life in our local city.

Production

Every MilkMade pint starts from scratch, with a completely different recipe for every flavor. (Did you know that most ice cream companies outsource their production, or buy a pre-made pre-pasteurized mix?) We manually mix, pasteurize, and churn our ice cream in small batches, a few gallons at a time. Each individual pint is meticulously packed (with love), then labeled by hand.

MilkMade is more than just a pint on a shelf, or a decadent flavor of ice cream, or a box delivered to your door. Behind each new flavor is an authentic story - the story of our partners, or how we dreamed up the flavor, and where we found inspiration. Each month, our team of Milkmaids hand-deliver pints to our members' doors.
